A Year of Community Connection and Care

NC Med Assist and UNC Health Partnership

In 2025, UNC Health deepened its commitment to serving all North Carolinians by strengthening its partnership with NC Med Assist, a North Carolina-based non-profit pharmacy organization dedicated to improving health by providing access to free and low-cost medications, health education, and mobile pharmacy services for underserved and uninsured communities. Through partnership, together we expanded access to essential medicines, preventive care, and health education for underserved communities across the state.

Through sponsorship of two NC Med Assist Mobile Free Pharmacy events, UNC Health helped deliver critical over-the-counter medications and comprehensive health education directly to those most in need. In Franklin County this March, more than 500 individuals, including early 40 homebound patients, were served. Services extended beyond medications to include cancer education, early heart attack care, CPR and stroke awareness, as well as access to mobile mammography resources. A second Mobile Free Pharmacy event in October in Orange County reached nearly 800 individuals including homebound patients, further reinforcing UNC Health’s commitment to meeting patients where they are.

Innovation in outreach remained central to this work. The UNC Health Mobile Outreach Team partnered with NC Med Assist throughout the year to provide vaccines and health screenings at additional Mobile Free Pharmacy sites, including Johnston County and communities across North Carolina, ensuring care reached both rural and urban populations.

UNC Health’s commitment also extended beyond direct service. System leadership, represented by Lynne Fiscus MD, MPH, UNC Health Chief Statewide Clinical & Academic Integration Officer, participated in NC Med Assist’s The Conversation panel on November 12, contributing to statewide dialogue on the future of healthcare access. UNC Health further supported NC Med Assist’s Executive Luncheon as a virtual table host, underscoring its role as a trusted partner in advancing equitable, community-centered healthcare.

Together, these efforts reflect UNC Health’s belief that collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility are essential to improving health outcomes and ensuring access to care for all North Carolinians today and for generations to come.

Addressing Food Insecurity

UNC Health proudly participated in Giving Tuesday this December, a global movement that inspires generosity and strengthens communities, by responding decisively to growing food insecurity across North Carolina following disruptions in SNAP benefits. SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a federally funded effort that helps eligible low-income individuals and families afford nutritious food through monthly benefits for groceries. Recognizing the direct connection between nutrition and health outcomes, UNC Health invested $100,000 in food banks serving all 100 counties in the state, reinforcing our mission to care for all North Carolinians, especially during times of uncertainty.

To maximize statewide impact, support was distributed across six regional food banks: the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, MANNA Food Bank, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, and the Food Bank of the Albemarle. This coordinated approach ensured that resources reached both rural and urban communities, addressing immediate needs while strengthening long-term community resilience.

UNC Health’s commitment extended beyond financial support. More than a hundred UNC Health teammates volunteered to “take over” the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina warehouse, sorting and packaging food for families in need. In partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes, UNC Health also supported a community food drive in November. Through various internal food drives at UNC Health locations across the state, our teammates are helping amplify awareness and engagement in the fight against hunger.

Together, these efforts highlight the power of collaboration and innovation in advancing community health. By partnering with trusted organizations and mobilizing teammates, UNC Health continues to reduce health disparities, strengthen local communities, and improve outcomes for vulnerable populations by providing access to care and essential resources.

UNC Health in the Community

Dr. Lisa Jordan, System Director of Community Health Outcomes & Analytics, presented the Deanna Carson Memorial Good Neighbor Award at Community Home Trust’s Annual Meeting. Community Home Trust delivers housing affordability for diverse populations in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and nearly 20% of their homeowners are UNC Health teammates.
Dr. Robert Ferris, Executive Director of the Lineberger Cancer Center and Chief of Oncology Clinical Services, and Laura Kelsey, Vice President of Cancer Care, welcomed guests to the 2025 SECU Family House Gala. The SECU Family House provides a safe, nurturing, and affordable home for patients and their loved ones who travel long distances to UNC Hospitals for life-saving procedures and treatment of serious illnesses.
